ENDING THE HIV EPIDEMIC
People involved in the criminal justice system have a higher prevalence of HIV/AIDS and untreated substance use disorder (SUD) than the general population. The National Institutes of Health’s Ending the HIV Epidemic Initiative has called for research on strategies that effectively integrate HIV and SUD treatment and prevention services for justice-involved populations.
The NIH’s Collaborative Network to End the HIV Epidemic and Address Addiction in the Criminal Justice System represents the first coordinated effort to investigate and develop innovative strategies to reduce the burdens of HIV, drug use, and other complicating factors affecting people involved in the criminal justice system. The collaborative will generate evidence to help fill gaps in treatment and preventive services for people transitioning from incarceration to community life.

REGIONAL RESEARCH HUBS
Eight Regional Research Hubs are conducting multisite clinical trials that engage people involved in the criminal justice system in behavioral interventions, medicated management of SUD, digital therapeutics, patient-centered treatment modalities, and other innovative strategies.
